Can we just take a moment to celebrate my second consecutive blog post on this site? To celebrate I thought that I would talk about the Harry Potter books, as I am currently re reading those for the first time as an adult. For me books have always been the one constant thing that I have always been able to rely on, especially when people haven’t always been around when I have needed. Books are my escape when the world gets too much and once again these books have proven that!
So without further hesitation, we’ll just dive straight in because now I can see why these books appeal to the adults as well as children who are still at school, here’s why students at school are still having adventures and maybe school can get a little trying sometimes and they need something to escape in to. Harry Potter would quite easily fill that gap because of the nail biting adventures that Harry, Hermione and Ron have whilst at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Then adults as I have recently found out connect more with the grief and relationship side of things within the book and also the fact that the dementors metaphorically match the more common feelings of depression and anxiety, with the fact that it takes a few happy memories for a witch or wizard to be able to conjure a patronus charm in order to chase off the dementors. These are just a few themes that have been fairly consistent throughout the books and the movies, no matter how many differences there are between the two.
As an adult now reading the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling feel that I can connect with these books and movies a lot more now if anything, than I could as a child reading the books because as a child, yes I did connect with the different adventures that Harry and his friends had at Hogwarts and then the fact that professors weren’t as nice to him as they probably could have been. But I think that was about all I could connect with as a child, but now as an adult I can connect with the feeling of loss, grief and relationships because of my own life experiences. This goes to show that you can still learn from the Harry Potter Series even when you are an adult and reading them again from afresh.
Yet this being said I still find the books as compelling as I did a few years ago when I first read them, so this shows what a brilliant writer and creator that J.K Rowling is, I literally can’t fault anything that she has done. She has created a universe that makes everyone feel safe and supported no matter where you come from.
